Not mentioned in the European press is the riot of the Gujjars, taking already the dimensions of a civil war.
What are Gujjars and what is the reason of the agitation?
In medieval times the Gujjars mainly living in the North- West of India where nomads, a section of them switched to agriculture. Now they are a large and political influential group. In the caste system of India they are OBC’s. What they want is to be downgraded to ST’s
To understand that you have to get familiar with the Indian cast system and the way the government tries to compensate the racist and discriminatingly practices, which can only be compared with the apartheid policy in earlier days in South- Africa and Nazism in Germany, with the difference that is this case the discrimination is not coming from the government but from the population.
THE CASTES
SC: These communities are the lowest in the caste hierarchy and called Dalits (the English called them untouchables)
ST: Originally people living in the forest or on the hills, isolated from modern life, but are not necessarily socially backward.
OBC: comprise the middle castes in the Hindi hierarchy.
Upper castes are not listed here.
For each of the undercastes the government has foreseen quotas. That means that for a governmental job e.g. at least 10% should be ST.
What are the Gujjar fighting for: The Gujjars get job reservations under the OBC quota. Now they are seeking reservation under the ST quota. This the Gujjars believe, would improve their job prospects. The demand of the Gujjars is fuelled by the success of the Meenas, another large community, granted ST status in 1956.


The protest activities consist mainly out of sit- in, blockage of the train tracks and destroying of the rails. Road blocking and putting cars and trucks on fire. The police react with lathi charges but sometimes has to use weapons to defend themselves (I hope). The agitators claim that the police fired unprovoked

ARE INDIANS RACIST- SOME UNEXPECTED ANSWERS

Indirectly I got an answer to my question of the blog below. Bishan Sahai, a brave open- minded racist and sexist wrote very honestly:
“ There is no denying that Indians, typified by the upper caste Hindus are extremely racially conscious. Which other society has an equivalent for malleech for other people ? It is a mistake however, to treat the bias for fair skin as racial or ethnic discrimination. That attitude is patently related to aesthetics, even if misconceived, just like one may find an oval face or long legs more attractive.
By the same token, there is nothing racist in regarding colored females incomparable with the prototype of cheerleaders. Their role is to titillate the libido of Indian males (fair, or brown or dusky or dark) – expensively displayed with white skin is more likely to do so, especially in bright incandescence. It is a matter of specifications for the job, which must be settled before the recruitment process begins”

Ruchi Metha wrote:” India is a hypocritical and racist nation. We are probably the most hypocritical nation on this planet. While on the one hand we condemn discrimination of any sort we have color based discrimination so deeply entrenched in our mindset that we are unable to tolerate colored cheerleaders. While we feel offended when we are at the receiving end, we do not bother to put our own house in order”

ARE INDIAN RACIST ?

The caste system is without any dought the most racist invention of all times. But this would be understandable, since all countries have had some kind of hierachical structure,having leaders and slaves once in their history but in INDIA IT STILL EXIST. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said at a conference: “Dalits have faced a unique discrimination in our society…. The only parallel to the practice of untouchability was apartheid.” The verbal form "have faced" is simply not true Dalits still are completely underprivilized and in some areas can not drink from the same water source as upper caste people.
Now in another area India has shown his ugly racist face:
Two cheerleaders from London were asked to leave the ground at Mohali “because of the colour of their skin” by the Preity Zinta event management company, Wizcraft International Entertainment, which handles her team, Kings XI Punjab.
One of the girls, Ellesha Newton, told The Telegraph: “It was okay when we reached the stadium. It was when we were going to take our positions that some of Wizcraft’s employees asked us to leave. We were surprised and asked them why and they told us it was because of the colour of our skin.”
Aldana said he found Ellesha and Sherinne Anderson, whom he had recruited as part of a team of 12, in tears when he reached the ground.“Sherinne and Ellesha were in a state of shock and crying outside the ground. I called them and asked them what was the matter and they told me that a guy from Wizcraft had forbidden them from entering the ground,” Aldana said.Aldana, who has supplied cheerleaders for Shah Rukh Khan’s Calcutta team, too, said when he confronted the Wizcraft people with the allegation they tried to pass it off as a casual comment. “They said people don’t like dark girls here. But if they wanted all blondes, they should have told me so. I would have arranged it.”On Aldana’s insistence, the girls were allowed back on the ground. But they were so upset that they didn’t want to take their positions on the stage.
“Sherinne and I talked it out amongst ourselves and we really didn’t want to go, but that’s why we were here and so we went,” said Ellesha, 22.
Sherinne, 25, burst out: “This kind of thing has never happened to us before, not in Europe, not here, nowhere.”

In his restless effords to keep the TV channels free of vulgarity and pornography, the IandB Minestry has detected once more an example of an absolute blow below the belt, showing a man in his underwear. Moving in the sanitisation of the small screen and keep it in old Victorian tradition, two underwear advertisments were banned being, indecent, vulgar and an attack to the purity of the Indian soul. The companies to pull the advertisments off were Frenchie X and Lux Cozy.
In the Frenchie X advertisment, a woman enters a room , to find a man in his underwear and close the door leaving the rest to the imagination of the spectator.... and that is it! Where do we go, if everybody uses rudeless and without any control his imagination !
The minestery said that there was an increase in the number of tasteless advertisments leaving helpless spectators all alone with their imagination, this is not suitable for unrestricted public viewing. We have received a lot of complains said the minister . So we ask all channels to refrain from showing such ads.
