HOW TO END HONOR KILLINGS

Out of TIMES OF INDIA

We don’t need to change the law, just enforce it

Despite the progress the country has made since independence the killing of family or clan members – because they have violated some archaic code of honour – takes place in India even today. Home minister P Chidambaram is right to call it a national shame. But the reason such killings continue to happen is the tolerant attitude that law enforcement often has towards them, especially in rural areas. This needs to change, and change fast.
Some have called for new legislation to deal with honour killings. This would be superfluous. It’s enough if they are treated as murder, and investigated and prosecuted accordingly. The perpetrators of the crime should be charged and tried under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code that deal with homicide. What we need to combat honour killings is strict enforcement of current laws while conducting an ongoing campaign to sensitise people and change mindsets.
A couple can still get lynched for committing the crime of marrying in the same gotra, as happened recently in Haryana. Khap (caste) panchayats pronounce judgement on a couple seen to go against established community customs and the rest of the village upholds the strictures using whatever means necessary. To them, it is right and necessary to act to punish whoever dares to break away from social norms. In many of these cases, local law enforcement agencies are loathe to disrupt the social balance by enforcing the law of the land. Therefore, they turn a blind eye to the illegal activities condoned by village elders. This is a vicious circle. If the law turns away complainants but sides instead with those who break the law, that itself reinforces archaic social norms which ought to have withered away.
The home minister must ensure that the perpetrators of these hateful murders are taken to task. The khap panchayats that pass these orders must be treated as accessories to the crime. Each such incident should carry a heavy price for the police and the local government in charge, so as to compel them to take timely action. Strict and harsh punishment would go a long way in deterring such crimes in the future. We can’t call ourselves a free society till we end honour killings. It’s only when the individual knows that he or she has the protection of the law that we can all be proud citizens of India.

Some recent examples of honor killing and how it works:
Patiala (Punjab): Even as a 21-year-old man was lynched by the girl's family in neighbouring Haryana in a case of honour killing on Wednesday, a similar incident of honour killing in Punjab went wrong when the mother of a youth was killed as she tried to save her son from his angry father-in-law.
Retired armyman Gurdeep Singh shot dead Manjit Kaur, mother of Balihar Singh in Brahmpura village of Patiala district late on Wednesday night, police officials said here today.
Balihar had married Gurdeep Singh's daughter Kamaljit Kaur a few weeks back against the wishes of her family. Both had got married at the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh, 100 km away, and had feared for their lives.
The armyman arrived at the house of Manjit Kaur on being told by relatives that his son-in-law and daughter had come there to meet her. He was carrying a .12-bore gun when he arrived.
As he aimed the gun in a fit of anger at Balihar, his mother Manjit Kaur tried to intervene to protect her son. Two shots were fired by Gurdeep Singh and the woman died on the spot even as her son fled the house to save himself.
Villagers later caught Gurdeep Singh and handed him over to the police.
The armyman was angry that his daughter married a man who was lower in social status and also belonged to the same village.
In some Punjab villages, marriages are not allowed within the village as boys and girls are considered brothers and sisters.
"We had sought police protection several times and had written to the police in this regard. But no action was taken. This unfortunate incident could have been avoided," Balihar Singh said.
Local police officials said that the accused had been arrested and the matter was being investigated. (IANS)

Chandigarh, June 15 (IANS) A young couple was hacked to death by the girl’s brother at their home in a village near Banur town in Punjab. The cold-blooded murder Saturday night was committed by Sarabjit Singh to avenge the honour of his family as his sister had married against the family’s wishes to the boy from an upper caste.
While the boy, Suresh Kumar, died on the spot, his wife Sunwinder succumbed to her injuries at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here.

Sarabjit attacked the couple with an axe while they were sleeping. He was arrested.
The couple were married February this year in the Punjab and Haryana High Court here. The girl’s family, which is from the Dalit community, was against her marriage to the upper caste boy of the same village, Gajju Khera, 25 km from here.
The girl’s family has been absconding after the kilings, police officials said. They added that teams have been dispatched to various places to trace the family.
Tarn Taran (Punjab): They paid for their love with their lives. Newly-married couple Balkar Singh and Ravindar Pal Kaur were shot dead at their village in Taran Taran, allegedly by members of the girls family.
Balkar was gunned down in the market and Ravindar was killed inside their house.
Says Balkar Singh’s mother, “After the marriage, the couple had come to the house for the first time. Balkar had gone to buy eatables in the nearby market for his relatives who were coming from England. A group of armed persons alighted from three cars and chased him”.
The two got married on January 1 and on the same day Ravindar filed a writ in the Punjab and Haryana High Court saying she feared threat to their lives from her family.
They were killed the day the police received the order from the court to give them protection
Says Tarn Taran SSP H.S Chahal, “Her father, brother and some other relatives armed with firearms killed the newly weds couple”.
Police say all the accused -- Ravindar's parents, her brother and her cousins are now absconding.

Now, the Merciful Lord has issued His Command.
Let no one chase after and attack anyone else.
Let all abide in peace, under this Benevolent Rule

H1N1 INFLUENZA- THE STATUS OF THE HOSPITAL IN AUNDH PUNE AS AN EXAMPLE

The actual figure of H1N1 influenza infected patients is 76. Not very just a start of the epidemie but high enough to look for "special" clinics able to cope with the rising amount of people needing quarataine and treatment:

This is what the parent of a swine flu-afflicted child in Aundh Hospital has to say

DIPTI BARVE

The new swine flu ward of the city at Aundh Civil Hospital is a dirty joke, literally. If you took a walk inside, you would probably come back with a bug deadlier than H1N1.
A reality check of the new ward in Aundh Hospital has shown, once again, how little the government actually cares about this pandemic.
To provide treatment, ensure samples are collected on time and to manage patients who cannot be admitted to Naidu Hospital, the state health services started 20-bed wards in Aundh Hospital and Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH), Pimpri-Chinchwad. However, among the three, Aundh Hospital is in a pathetic shape. According to WHO guidelines, no one except hospital staff and parents can enter a swine flu ward. But staff at Aundh Hospital are least bothered. This reporter entered the ward even as ward boys and nurses looked on. The ward has 20 patients of which most are school children aged between 10 and 16 years, from Symbiosis and New India School. These patients are being kept in unhygienic conditions, without basic necessities like water, electricity and cleanliness. Their parents are fed up of the casual attitude of the staff.
Shraddha Padhye, whose daughter is admitted in Aundh Hospital, told Mirror, “My daughter is admitted to hell! There is no water to have a bath since the past five days. None of the staff sponges the patients. Nurses and ward boys don’t even bother to check whether the patient is getting medicine or food on time. For hours, none of the doctors come to check them. Younger children cry incessantly because of mosquitoes and dirty toilets.”
Rajesh Mokashi, whose son is in this ward said, “The staff is not trained for swine flu management. They are least bothered about the precautions and spread of the disease. One of the nurses gave a very young child two tablets of Combiflam at once, which is not advisable. Nobody realises the gravity of the problem. They behave like it’s a general ward. We want permission for the children to be home quarantined and treated. We can take better care of our children and take all the precautions.”
Vanita Gawade, another parent, said, “From day one, I haven’t seen a doctor or nurse come for routine check-ups. A child fell off the bed as the beds are in a bad condition. There are no movable wash basins for the children to vomit in. Patients vomit on curtains which aren’t even washed later. Dustbins and buckets are kept together. For past five days, the toilet was choked and dirty water flowed till the beds of those patients who were close to the toilet. Tubes and bulbs in the ward and in toilets do not work. Because of these pathetic conditions we are scared that our children will contract other infections.”
When Mirror contacted Dr Nitin Bilolikar, civil surgeon at Aundh Civil Hospital about this issue, he replied, “We have started this swine flu ward just six days ago so it will take time for things to fall in place. We have provided all the basic amenities to the patients. I will instruct the staff about not allowing visitors to enter the swine flu ward. I will definitely look into the matter.”

THE HOSPITAL OFFERS:

• Lack of trained staff

• Choked toilets and bath rooms

• No co-ordination between staff and administration

• No basic amenities like water and electricity

• No daily check ups and medicine follow ups

• Absence of movable basins for vomiting

• Vomit stained curtains

• Children haven’t been bathed or sponged for the past
five days

ONE MORE EXAMPLE OF CHILD LABOUR AND CHILD TORTURE

10-yr-old branded with hot spoon for not doing dishes

Panaji: A ten-year-old girl employed as a maid in a house at Porvorim in Goa has alleged that her employers would place a scorching hot flat steel spoon on her body for failing to wash utensils even when there was no utensils to wash. She would also be kicked on the stomach and beaten, she told cops.
For her “failures”, the minor, a native of Gadak, Hubli, wasn’t just punished but also allegedly regularly taunted by her employers, who would say, “tumara jaat hi aisa hai”. The girl belongs to a scheduled tribe.
Sources said the minor, who lost her father last year, has never been to school and was living with her grandparents in Goa, when a neighbour approached the grandmother seeking to place the minor as a domestic help at Pednekar’s residence. The girl was with the family for almost seven months and allegedly subjected to atrocities almost everyday.
Police have booked a case under IPC’s Prevention of Atrocities (SC/ST) Act, and Goa Children’s Act against her employer Audumber (Shubham) Pednekar, a civil engineer, his wife Minaxi and sister-inlaw Tina. While Audumber was arrested and later released on bail, Minaxi and Tina are absconding.
“She told us that at first the family was fine and she was asked to do all the house work. The torture started a month later, when Tina allegedly hit her with a wire for not cleaning the utensils.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES FROM THE COUNTRY OF KAMA SUTRA

Sex-exercises to keep you fit
FROM: MONIKA RAWAL, 29 July 2009,
|
While it may seem hard to take out time to hit the gym
for a workout session, very few people know that indulging in a sweat-inducing sex session is equally beneficial.

It not only helps burning extra calories, but also allows couples to perform routine exercises and also enjoy sexual pleasure. What else can couples ask for!

Dr. Basheer Ahmad Roy, a Bangalore-based sex specialist states, “Almost all muscles including the legs, thighs, arms, shoulders and lower abdomen are worked upon during a sexual interaction. Anything that is done for the body should be done for at least 15 minutes and a sex session may not stretch for this long. So couples need to pay extra attention that if they wish to derive additional health benefits from sexual positions, they need to prolong sexual activity right from foreplay to the climax state.”

Apart from the fact that sex brings relief from headaches, reduces depression and tranquilises the mind, leads to glowing hair and skin etc, it’s also true that many sexual positions double up as easy workouts.

Dr. Shivi Jaggi, a Delhi-based sexologist asserts, “Sex helps burning a lot of calories. Different positions in which partners participate as per their comfort level lead to a fit body. A few complex positions that require more of physical strength and involve more work lead to weight-loss and exercising of muscles. Intensity of movements and duration of sex make a lot of difference.

Here are some lovemaking positions, which will let you stretch the most important muscle groups in your body...

Missionary position (Man on top)
In the Indian context, more than 90 per cent of couples indulge in the missionary position in bed, which seems to be quite gratifying for them. As the act involves weight balancing, it obviously has a number of physical benefits. The missionary position is all about stretching, arching and tightening. While the male partner is on top, the female laying on her back can also stretch her back, arch and tighten the abs. In addition, she can also try tightening the kegel muscles right during the act.

Dr. Jaggi elucidates, “The partner on top gets more involved in the physical activity. With a male partner on top, a lot of pressure is borne by his arms and shoulders. Besides, elbows and knees are used to the maximum while balancing in such a position; hence it stretches the muscles in both these body parts. In addition, thigh muscles are also worked upon during the missionary position, as you are almost on your knees during the act.”

Woman on top
It is said that women can orgasm quickly while on top. Yet there is an evident reluctance among Indian women to try this position in bed. But having a female partner taking the lead is a very good exercise. It allows both partners to enjoy an equal participation, where the woman uses her hands and arms to prop up and down, and the male partner is holding the woman thus balancing her body weight.

Dr. Jaggi shares, “With the woman on the top, the weight would normally be borne by the male partner. Women being the physically weaker counterpart during sex, you cannot expect them to hold on to their body mass completely. So again it’s more of exercise for the men, where they use their biceps’ muscles to hold their female partner. For a female too, just to maintain the position for a longer duration, she is stretching her biceps, triceps, forearms and chest muscles to the fullest.”
Yet another creative sexual position, it involves couples facing each either on a sofa, bed or the floor. The position also lets you flex your toes forward, which is a good way to stretch your calf muscles. Since both partners are sitting throughout the act, certain muscles, which are worked upon heavily, have to be stable and strong to ensure a gratifying act.

Dr. Pushkar Gupta, a Chandigarh-based sex therapist explains, “Sitting missionary involves more physical work as compared to the missionary position where a couple is lying down. As the position requires both partners sitting straight facing each other, with the female partner wrapping her legs around a man’s hips, her back muscles are highly involved. Also to get the right posture, you end up putting a lot of strain on your spinal muscles, thigh muscles and lower back, which in a way is a good stretching exercise. Retaining the same position and trying different moves and lifts, your lower abdomen is also worked upon. Be cautious if you have a weak back, as excessive stretching may give you cramps and hurt you.”

Against the wall
Having sex against a wall – either in the washroom or a store room can be fun at times. Not only the standing posture would bring enhanced pleasure, but it would also allow you enjoy a workout session while you indulge in a sex romp. During this position, the quads (front top leg) and lower back are exercised. Also, as the male leans slightly forward, the female can arch her back thus indulging in a perfect exercise.

Dr. Gupta asserts, “Having sex standing against a wall is usually meant for couples who are physically stable. Since you are doing the act standing throughout, it needs that physical stamina to carry on for a longer time period. Then height also plays an important role in this stance, as in accordance to that only, you will decide the angle in which you need to bend and stretch your thighs and legs. In such a sexual position, another very good exercise could be lifting your female partner and nothing can be better than enjoying the pleasure and burning some calories alongside.”

Legs on shoulders
Such an act is not only a sex position but also a great form of foreplay. As it requites the female partner to be physically charged up and creative in bed, let’s not forget how beneficial this act is for the body muscles. Having a female raising her legs to reach a man’s shoulder is a perfect way to arouse him and at the same time it allows the female to stretch her leg muscles and tone her abs in the process.

Dr. Jaggi agrees, “It’s a very wonderful aerobic exercise, especially done by females using her flexible body. Though it may look like yet another foreplay act trying to turn on your partner, but it turns out to be a great workout where you can fully stretch your leg muscles. Whatever you get out of a 30 minute long cycling session while gymming, this sex posture can bring you almost equal, if not better, results.”

Crouching and bending
Try a prolonged foreplay with acts like sitting, bending and crouching, in addition to regular sex positions. This will surely be more advantageous when it comes to a physical workout.

Dr. Gupta says, “Very common but lesser tried sex position, bending and crouching demands a lot of bends and curves, so the spinal muscles are exercised here. Also, the inner thigh muscles get a lot of exercise as you bend. While sitting or bending, you end up putting pressure on your abdominal area as well, which can help you get into shape. In case of a lower back ache, avoid this position, as it may worsen the pain further.”

THE INDIAN SOLUTION FOR SWINE FLUE (H1N1 Influenza)- JUST STAY HOME FOR 10 DAYS

The India Govt simply prescribes home stay for 7-10 days after H1N1 influenza..... either you are death and than you can be burned or you arise out of the ashes and can fo back to school or business

New Delhi: Those showing mild symptoms of H1N1 Influenza need not get admitted to a hospital or even get tested for infection. They should simply stay at home for 7-10 days without stepping out or meeting anyone. Students should avoid going to class for a week, for which they don’t even have to produce a medical certificate to the school. Schools, on the other hand, have been asked to stay open in case a student tests positive for H1N1.
They will, however, have to inform the health authorities if a large number of students complain of flu-like symptoms so that contact tracing can be conducted. These are some of the few recommendations finalized by the Union government on Tuesday during the crucial meeting of the health ministry’s joint monitoring group. On Wednesday, the ministry will dispatch these national guidelines to all states informing them that India is gradually switching over to admitting only severe patients showing flu-like symptoms and complaining of lower respiratory disease.
Screening at airports will also be stopped in the near future and all suspected patients would no more be tested. Tamiflu will also be used judiciously and administered only to those with serious H1N1 influenza like symptoms.
With the number of positive H1N1 cases in India inching towards the 500-mark (475 positive cases at present), the country is fast bracing with the reality that the virus has got entrenched in the community and can no more be controlled. “In a directive to be sent on Wednesday, the Centre will ask states to ensure that schools don’t shut down because of H1N1 infection among its students. Students will be informed to stay at home if they feel unwell. They will, however, not have to produce medical certificates to prove they are H1N1 infected or not. Schools will be told not to press for such medical certificates,” officials who were part of the crucial meeting said. Delhi has already reported 30 cases of H1N1 infection among school students while Pune has reported around 45 cases among students.

In Thailand where there are a lot mor cases , things are take a little more serious , but of course Indian seeing themselves as the superior race of the world are immune against H1N!

Thai authorities on Wednesday announced another 21 deaths from swine flu in the past week, bringing the death toll to 65. Across the kingdom 30 women and 35 men have been killed by the A(H1N1) virus in 27 of the 76 provinces, a public health ministry statement said.
Of these victims, 41 had underlying diseases such as heart problems, diabetes or kidney failure, the ministry said, while the other 24 were admitted to hospital too late to be saved.
Thailand’s cabinet on Tuesday earmarked an additional 13.2 million dollars to combat swine flu as the number of infections climbed to an estimated 500,000.
A medical expert had reported the 500,000 figure to the cabinet, government spokesman Phumin Leetheeraprasert said, although Wednesday’s health ministry statement said it could not accurately confirm the total number.

BRAVERY TEST AT SCHOOL

After the publication of the incredible and ridiculous so called bravery test in TIMES OF INDIA a political reaction came: Tamil Nadu school education minister Thangam Thennarasu directed officials to issue circulars to schools across the state, instructing them not to subject students to “any kind of unsafe practices”. The direction comes in the wake of a shocking report published in The Times of India on Tuesday about a government school in Villupuram organising a ‘bravery show’, in which a motorcyclist rode over the outstretched hands of young students, aged about 10 years, on July 15.
The video attached speaks for itselves how can anyone educational skilled person come to the idea to force kids to this kind of bravery test
Reacting strongly to the Villupuram incident, activists have condemned the school for “failing in its basic duty to protect and provide safety to its wards” and demanded action against the management. ‘‘When acts of bravery or adventure appear even remotely harmful to the child, they shouldn’t be a part of it,’’ an activist said.
Ossie Fernandes, convenor of the Tamil Nadu Child Rights Protection Network, said, “This is torture, not bravery. Anything could have gone wrong. The school shouldn’t be asking children to perform such feats. It has seriously failed in its duty to protect the children.”
Joint secretary of the Indian Council for Child Welfare Girija Kumarbabu said it was akin to child abuse when schools asked children to take part in such shocking events without bothering about their safety.
