INDIAN ROMANCE - THE STORY OF EZAZ AND ILLIYAS DAUGHTER

A bridegroom and his family were beaten up for raising their dowry demand from the bride’s father a day after the wedding day. As soon as they came to know about the unreasonable demand, residents of Badarpur village, about 20 km away from Nuh in Haryana, on Saturday night forced the groom to divorce his wife even before the ‘bidaai’ as he did not ‘‘deserve her’’.

Sources said Ezaz Khan of Akera village, who studies in Jamia Milia Islamia in Delhi, reached Badarpur on Saturday to marry the daughter of Illiyas, a landlord. Everything was fine and nikaah was performed with all pomp and show. However, when the time came for ‘bidaai’ and Illiyas went to hand over the key of Maruti Alto to the bridegroom, he refused to take it. Ezaz said he would not accept anything less than a Scorpio and Rs 15 lakh in cash. The bridegroom and his father were not only beaten black and blue by the villagers, but they also took 25 baraatis hostage and tonsured heads of Ezaz and his father. Later in the night, a village panchayat was called and it pronounced the decision that the family of Ezaz would have to pay Rs 8 lakh — the money spent by the girl’s family since engagement — if they wanted to get released. Left with no option, Khurshid
Khan, Ezaz’s father agreed to pay the money. They were released on Sunday. Meanwhile, the police chose to keep away from the spot. A senior police officer defended the move saying that in cases like this, panchayat takes its own decision. Illiyas, while upset over the way things went, said he was also happy that his girl was saved from going into a greedy family. He said: ‘‘We agreed to the marriage only because the boy is studying in a reputed institute in Delhi. But I will rather marry my daughter off to someone illiterate.’’ The region, predominated by Meo-Muslims, has a high rate of illiteracy and poverty. Residents said some families in the area had started using dowry as a means to get money. They said that these families sent their boys to study in Delhi and then sought lakhs in dowry. ‘‘Landlords are willing to shell out big sums for an educated son-in-law, but this is a bad trend,’’ said Mehtab Alam, a villager.

INDIAN ROMANCE IV

Another suicide case in New Delhi a 48-year-old housewife committed suicide by jumping off the eighth floor of a multi-storeyed apartment. The victim, Surinder Walia, has left behind a ''suicide note'' which reportedly mentions that she was depressed after her daughter's in-laws started demanding dowry and harassing her daughter immediately after the marriage. Walia's family said that their daughter Amrita got married to Gaurav Manchanda on April 28 this year. The suicide note stated that she was not happy with the way her daughter's life had turned out to be after marriage and that the in-laws were continuously taunting Amrita and were not satisfied with the gifts exchanged during the wedding. In the note, she asked her husband to take care of Amrita and their younger son, who is studying in class XII. She also requested her husband not to send the daughter back to her in-laws as ''they might make her life more miserable''. If the children so wanted, Walia should arrange for sending both the children abroad. Walia added, ''Surinder was a very strong woman and I can't believe that she took such a drastic step.

HER LAST WORDS

To Sumit
Hardly 12 days to go before our third marriage anniversary. However, I know it would give you immense pleasure if we part company before that, shall I say, if I walk out of your live. I know Sumit that you neiter love me nor like me. You only tolerate me. What we have is one-sided love. Such affairs are seldom succesfull. I loved you from my heart but you probably tought my feelings were not genuine, I can’t blame you for this; maybe sometimes lacking in my love for you. I couldn’t find a place in your heart.
You loved me initially. Or, at least , it seemed to me. Those were the best days of my live. You can live without me , but I can’t. Everybody has to die. Some die soon some very late. My days are over. I am happy that I am dying as a married woman and not as someone who was dumped by her husband. My only request to you is that to dress me up like a newly married bride for cremation. Rest assured that neither you nor any of your family members will be blamed for my death. I am also writing to my father to ensure this. I want to end this by saying that nobody loved you as much as I did.

To Police
My husband or his family members are not responsible for my death. Nobody has forced me to take this decision. Please don’t put the blame on anybody.

To Father
I’ ll be gone the time you receive this letter. You know that I can’t live without Sumit. The problem is that Sumit doesn’t want to live with me . Please don’t regret anything . Only God decides how long can a person live. Please don’t worry and also take care of my mother. Had there been a divorce, I would have died several times in your presence. I am helpless I can’t live without him. You have catered to all my whims and fancies. I hope you will also fulfill my last wish. Please assure that Sumit doesn’t suffer from my death. My soul will not rest in peace if something happens to him. Nobody is responsible for my death. It is all destiny.

No comment from my side, this cannot be commented. May Manisha be in peace but her love message and her sacrifice unforgotten.
Just for your information: divorce rate in India is one of the lowest of the world and Indians are proud of that. Dowry is strictly illegal but usus.
